The Original Ceylon Tea People

James Taylor, the Scottish Tea Planter is considered to be the pioneer of Ceylon Tea. He began the first commercial tea plantation in 1867 on 9 acres of land at Loolecondra Estate with tea seeds brought from Assam, India. In 1872, he sold a package containing 23 pounds of tea in London for a princely sum of Rs.58. The first recorded tea export was, however in 1987, consigned to London on board the Steam Ship, Duke of Argyle. This was the founding of Ceylon Tea, the country now known as Sri Lanka.

The history of George Steuart and Company is closely intertwined with the fortunes of Sri Lanka's Tea industry. No other company can claim the expert and intimate knowledge that comes from being the original tea people, backed by 175 years of expertise drawn from its parent firm George Steuart & Company.

While keeping the old traditions alive, Steuarts Teas has also benchmarked itself against international quality standards and presently conforms to the ISO 9001:2008, ISO 22000:2005, HACCP and GMP standards. The range of products and processes has been certified for EC, JAS & USDA-NOP Organic Standards.
